There are no disappointments in life… The Lesson That Changed Everything
I was listening to The Game of Life and How to Play It by Florence Scovel Shinn (1925) when a single line stopped me in my tracks:
"There are no disappointments."
Something in my body just knew it was true.
How often do we crave or long for something… or someone… only to later realise how lucky we were not to receive it?
How often do we wish the universe would just. go. to. OUR. plan.
Only to have that plan shift into something far more magical?
Enter Universe playing her magically frustrating games hahaha <3
Everything we desire now isn’t necessarily what we’ll desire later.
Everything we think we know? It’s rarely the full picture.
This is why faith has played such a massive role in my life these past few years.
But faith doesn’t mean sitting back and waiting for miracles to happen.
It means you try.
You commit.
YOU put in effort.
And then… you leave the rest up to God/Universe/Higher Powers that be.
Let me tell you about my first romantic heartbreak that led to my greatest expansion
The other night, I was walking home with a friend, talking about our exes.
I remembered the six months after discovering my ex-fiancé had been cheating on me.
It felt like drowning at the time…
I cried myself to sleep. I couldn’t understand what I had done to deserve it. I threw myself into work to escape the chaos inside me.
And now? I look back, and I see the things I couldn’t see at the time:
It was the catalyst for my healing journey
It taught me how to truly love myself (like REALLY)
The breakup was the third sign to move to Australia (which led me to four beautiful years there, one in New Zealand & 7 months in Mexico!).
It taught me forgiveness—I see a very hurt man, and I forgive him entirely
It saved me from a marriage that wasn’t aligned with my soul’s path
It took me to so many juicy & beautiful divine humans!!!!!
My goodness! What I thought was my deepest heartbreak was actually the doorway to my greatest expansion.
I hope my loves who are frantically googling “How to heal from heartbreak” & “When does the heart break pain end” find this…
& a tiny piece of hope returns to their lives.
The Chinese Proverb that I come back to when life is seemingly disastrous, painful or just plain mean
This all reminds me of one of my favorite Chinese proverbs:
A farmer and his son had a beloved stallion who helped the family earn a living. One day, the horse ran away. Their neighbors exclaimed, “Your horse ran away—what terrible luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
A few days later, the horse returned, leading several wild mares back to the farm. The neighbors shouted, “Your horse has returned with more horses! What great luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
Later that week, the farmer’s son was trying to break in one of the mares, but she threw him to the ground, breaking his leg. The villagers cried, “Your son broke his leg—what terrible luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
A few weeks later, soldiers came through town, recruiting all able-bodied young men for the army. They did not take the farmer’s son, still recovering from his injury. Friends cheered, “Your son is spared! What tremendous luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see.”
What if little is truly “Bad”?
Maybe we just don’t yet see the results of an action.
Whenever something in my life goes "wrong," I whisper to myself:
"There are no disappointments."
And I remember the Man with the Horse.
Life is always unfolding in ways we can’t yet see.
So if you’re struggling with something right now, trust that this moment isn’t the final chapter. Give it time. Give it space.
Maybe one day, you’ll look back and see the masterpiece being painted behind the scenes.
You are exactly where you’re meant to be, beautiful. 💛
